More Wood! Audi A4 Allroad Black Forest Edition

Audi A4 Allroad Black Forest Walnut edition—Finishing a retro-inspired woody triumvirate with my recent Jeep Wrangler Woodsman and Buick Apollo Estate chops, I've micro-veneered the sides and tailgate of this all-wheel drive German luxury compact wagon with genuine walnut from the Black Forest of southern Germany. I've also gracefully changed the greenhouse and lowered the bodysides a bit for a more sporting profile. High fashion, high quality, sporting luxury woody wagon... what more could the well-to-do successful graphic artist ask for, lol?

The background of this image includes a vignette of sailboats in a harbor photographed by none other than Woody, of Woody's Car Site, a very loyal reader!

  1. I love, love, love all of these "woodies." There are so many ways to go with the application of wood to a "station wagon." I put that in quotes because no manufacturer calls anything a station wagon anymore.

I also enjoyed all the various non-wagon iterations of the past -- like the LeBaron convertibles, the 68 Chrysler Newport hardtops and convertibles and the 68 Mercury convertible. I think the PT Crusier was also available in a woodie version at some point in its career.

There needs to be more whimsy in car design!

  2. Thanks, Paul. Needless to say I agree with all of your choices! I have to say my woodies never go over very big out there in "Webland," but I think they'd be such a draw. I think the wood siding can be done in a contemporary way and still look like high-end furniture and industrial design. I'll keep putting 'em out there!

  3. Chrysler attempted to go 'wood" when they were making PT Cruisers Technically, they could have done that with the Calibers. I can imagine the 2012 Bettle with wood on the sides too… :)

  5. I cannot say that I am a huge 'woody'fan I guess because so many were just crummy vinyl but some Chryslers did a better job that I appreciated more. They made the effort to make them look more like the real thing.

  6. I grew up loving even the vinyl-sided "woodies." I always thought that the wood contrasted so well with the paint colors. We seemed to have more wooden things back then. I remember going to the TV store and we'd spend most of the time picking out the one with the wooden cabinet that best matched the furniture at home. We had a 6 foot long stereo/record player that looked like a banquette or some sort of large cabinet. The wood on cars just added a beautiful detail. But you can't beat the REAL woodies built up until the very early Fifties.

Thanks for the link. An occasional Ford or Mercury crept into that list!

  8. Those are great, Bob, thanks! I like their simple design, the stark photography and sentiments. Chevy Runs Deep, I guess!

  9. I think the current Lincoln MKT would look much improved with a woody treatment! Can anyone else picture it?
