2014 Mustang Clay Prototype a la Artandcolour

Based on the Evos concept, this 2014 Mustang GT 5.0 clay prototype was recently snapped in Dearborn by one of casey/artandcolour's spy photographers as it was about to be reviewed by FoMoCo execs.

Or I just photoshopped it from a photograph, lol. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, but I'm going to give it another shot when I have time, and bring the rear wheels forward about 6-inches. I left the wheelbase from the Evos, but I think it needs to be shortened for a Mustang. I lengthened the hood by about 8-inches from the Evos, but in hindsight, the wheelbase still looks too long to me.

It's pretty hard redesigning an Icon, even if only in Photoshop!

  1. Great Mustang concept Casey! Don't change a thing.
Except the color, I'll take mine in Yellow Blaze please!

  2. I think you're right about shortening it for the Mustang but you could keep the longer wheelbase and use it for the Lincoln you're doing, the Mark (not MK!) X (10).

I saw a lot of Mustang in the Evos pics, and then read in AE (I think) about the revolutionary Mustang that will debut in a couple of years. I think you've achieved that with this one.

  3. Another positive about leaving it the way that it is is that the iconic Mustang "C" contour on the bodyside is represented very well in your current concept without being a literal translation. If you shorten the wheelbase it will negatively impact the contour because the wheel flare can't be altered.
Referencing Paul, NYC, I agree with you doing a Mark X concept, put I think it should be even longer to create a voluminous rear compartment, and it should have suicide 1/2 doors for easy ingress/egress.

  4. thanks, guys! A Lincoln version sounds like a great way for Lincoln to reenter the rear wheel drive market, too.

  5. At first glance thought it was a Lotus, but our cleaver friend add his own flavor to the Stang.. The modifications gives it a much more global feel to it which the car needs if it were to sell well in Japan for example.

  6. Great photoshop job. I really like it. I do think though, the rear end taillight panel will be alot more different than the current car.

  7. Thanks. It probably will be vastly different. I don't really try to "predict" what a mfr will do, I just make cars I'd like to see myself. I'm a frustrated car designer at heart, lol.

  8. That fastback look looks good on the 70s Mustangs, but here... Hellllll NO lol

    1. Well, it's just my guess, lol. Maybe you'll get your wish and it won't look anything like this!

  10. Of all of "2014 Mustang Concept" picture mockups I've seen online, this is my favorite. As a lifelong Mustang fan (my dad had a factory-order 69 Mach I) I appreciate the way that you have incorporated classic Mustang styling cues in a thoroughly modern global car. I hear that the next-gen is going to be smaller and lighter with IRS and that's easy to visualize in your design. Great job! Hope FoMoCo's 2014 1/2 'Stang looks a lot like yours!

    1. Thanks, Robert! We'll find out in the spring, I think, just how close this rendering is. I don't usually try to predict what real designers will do, just what I wish they would do.

  11. I have the 2012 mustang and love the retro design of that car. But if they are not using the retro look any longer your concept design is the best I have seen. Hopefully it will look similar to this. Great job ford should employ you!!!

    1. thanks, Gino. I used that red Ford concept car as the base, the Evos, which is what I think Ford will do. I don't really try to predict as much as I try to make cars I would like to buy myself. Congrats on the '12 Mustang! I love the current Mustangs. They're honestly the best 'Stangs Ford has ever produced.

  12. That looks fairly close to the clay model pics that have circulated recently. As far as all of you who are making crude, brain-dead comments, grow up.

  13. Great job on the render. I love the retro look, but if the mustang must go global and become more modern, I think you have a great idea of what it can and probably should look like if Ford goes in that direction.

Your render ended up on the Mustang6G forums by the way. Maybe you can weigh in on the discussions about the render. I'm sure they'd love to hear it straight from the source.

    I'm GTSquid on there :)

    1. thank you for commenting. I think it's better if I don't join the discussion. I generally don't get along very well with forums and their carved-in-stone opinions about whichever cars the forum is based on. I really thank you for coming over here and commenting though.

  14. Casey,

I think your rendering is awesome. It's impressive you put together such a rendering years ago that seems to be a pretty accurate representation of what the car will most likely look like.

With your permission, I'd like to share this on my Mustang blog with a comparison to some of the "spy' photos that have come out lately.

I'll full accredit the image to you and link back to this post, of course.

    1. Hi Andrew,
Sure, go ahead and thanks for asking! But be prepared for a shitstorm, lol. It's been posted on other websites, too, and it seems the majority of Mustang lovers don't like it. I never got around to shortening the wheelbase behind the doors, but I think it still works. I really should do another one. Have you seen my Glassback or 4-door "Stangs, lol?

    2. here's another of my Mustang threads. It's on my other blog. I need to move all my cars to this blog one of these days.

I've done a lot of Mustangs. I like the idea of a modern day notchback coupe, too.

    3. Even though Ford would probably never do it, bringing back the notch and a fastback/hatchback option would be awesome. I think I'd go for a hatch if they made one myself.

BTW my blog is up, thanks for letting me use your work and let me know if you'd like anything changed.
